AJ Styles def. Chad Gable to gain entry into the Independence Day Battle Royal

After United States Champion Kevin Owens reminded SmackDown LIVE General Manager Daniel Bryan that he had defeated both AJ Styles and Chad Gable to retain his title in recent weeks, The “Yes!” Man set up a match between the two Superstars for tonight. Per Bryan, the winner would earn a spot in tonight’s Independence Day Battle Royal to determine the No. 1 contender to Owens’ title, and the loser would be left out completely. Basically, “win and you’re in.”

With so much at stake, Gable and The Phenomenal One left it all in the ring in a breathtaking bout. Much like he did against KO several weeks ago, the American Alpha member proved to be every ounce of ready and willing as his slogan suggests, but Styles gutted it out and connected with a head-ringing Phenomenal Forearm to claim the hard-fought victory, first giving Gable a nod of respect before making his exit.

United States Champion Kevin Owens def. Chad Gable in the New Face of America Open Challenge

United States Champion Kevin Owens wanted to reignite the New Face of America Open Challenge for his title on SmackDown LIVE but was quickly surprised when the first challenger out the gate was AJ Styles. The Phenomenal One made it clear that he wanted nothing more than to defeat Owens for the United States Championship, but KO quickly maneuvered his way around Styles’ challenge by stating that the only competitors eligible for the open challenge were those from Dayton, Ohio.

Owens was in store for yet another surprise, though, when Chad Gable of American Alpha answered the call, seemingly claiming that the arena itself was his home. Styles instead moved to the commentary desk as he watched Gable challenge KO.

Refusing to back down, the tenacious Gable gave Owens everything he had and seemed poised to snag both the victory and the championship several times. However, Owens weathered the storm and retained the gold when he planted Gable into the canvas with a devastating Pop-up Powerbomb for three.

American Alpha def. The Colons in a Beat the Clock Challenge Match

As the first two of the four teams competing in the Beat the Clock Challenge, American Alpha and The Colons tried to set the pace to determine the new No. 1 contenders to The Usos’ SmackDown Tag Team Championship.

Jason Jordan & Chad Gable worked vigorously, seeking redemption from their loss to Primo & Epico a week ago. The two teams engaged in an all-out scramble, looking to end matters quickly and establish a time that would be tough to beat.

American Alpha found the winner’s circle, defeating The Colons with Grand Amplitude. It would now be up to The Ascension or Breezango to claim victory in less than 5:17 later in the show.

With American Alpha’s win time of 5:17 looming large, Breezango and The Ascension knew they would have to act quickly if they wanted to secure top contendership to the SmackDown Tag Team Championship at WWE Backlash.

Konnor & Viktor attempted to use their size and strength to wear down Tyler Breeze & Fandango, but Fandango connected with the Falcon Arrow onto Viktor, allowing Breezango to topple The Ascension with 2:36 to spare to become the new No. 1 contenders to the SmackDown Tag Team Titles!
